Dental crowns, also known as “caps,” are used when a tooth is severely decayed or damaged. These custom-made dental restorations are designed based on your child’s tooth size, shape, and color, and create a protective barrier while allowing their natural tooth to strengthen over time.
Most often, dental crowns are recommended for young children who experience the following situations:
As a McKinney pediatric dentist, Dr. Bear understands the process of receiving a dental crown might seem scary or unpleasant for both you and your child. The good news is that he and his team will first and foremost make sure your little one is safe and comfortable throughout the entire process.
You can expect to discuss the various methods of sedation Dr. Bear offers to all his young patients. Once he determines which solution (i.e. nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation) will most benefit your child, you can expect it to be administered the day of treatment.
Once your child is fully relaxed, Dr. Bear will begin to clear away the decayed or damaged areas of the tooth, ensuring all debris is removed. Once the tooth is cleaned, he will use a composite resin to fill in the tooth, creating a tight seal. Next, he will prep the tooth by gently filing it down before taking impressions, which will be sent to a dental lab for technicians to begin creating your child’s zirconia white dental crown. In the meantime, they will be fitted with a temporary crown that they will wear until the finalized restoration is ready for placement.
After several weeks, you and your child will return to our office to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one put into place. Dr. Bear will ensure it fits comfortably and is secured around the weakened tooth for maximum protection.
When it comes to receiving a zirconia white dental crown, your child will experience a multitude of benefits, including:
