Depending on the age of your child, the type of dental checkup they will receive might vary. For infants, this might be a simple visual exam to ensure all teeth are erupting properly and there are no early signs of tooth decay. As your child grows older, we will capture digital X-rays that will allow Dr. Bear to view areas of the mouth not visible to the naked eye. He will then look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and deviations from normal oral development.
Should Dr. Bear find anything abnormal or cause for concern, he will formulate a personalized plan and go over the recommended treatment with you and your child.
During your child’s visit, they will also receive a professional dental cleaning by one of our highly-skilled and training dental hygienists. It is during this portion of the visit that they will remove any hardened plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth and gums, ensuring they do not develop gum pockets as a result of bacteria attacking these soft tissues.
If agreed upon between you and Dr. Bear, we will also be happy to administer a fluoride treatment and/or dental sealants to better protect your child’s teeth from decay in-between their appointments.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists and your kid’s dentist in McKinney recommend all children maintain regular six-month dental appointments. The reason for this is to set children up on a positive path to better oral health. It is also necessary because of the increased risk children have for developing cavities. Although baby teeth eventually fall out, it is necessary that they remain healthy and in place as long as possible. When decay becomes a serious problem, it can hinder the potential of these teeth remaining in their proper location, which can ultimately lead to problems with their adult teeth.
Through regular dental checkups and cleanings, we can monitor their oral development and better protect their smile from decay and other harmful dental problems. At every visit, our team will go over helpful tips to improve your child’s at-home oral hygiene routine as well as offer suggestions as to how you can help your child get excited about taking care of their smile.
